ADVENT 2025

Advent Series: Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, which means "coming." Advent is a season of preparation for the coming of Christ: to receive faithfully the risen Christ who comes to us in Word and Spirit, and to await with hope Christ's coming in final victory.

Advent begins on November 30, marking the beginning of the Christian year, and ends at sunset on Christmas Eve, always including four Sundays.

Both purple and blue are traditional colors for Advent and are both recognized in The United Methodist Book of Worship. Purple, as the color of royalty, it is fitting for Christ our King. Blue signifies hope and is traditionally associated with Mary, the mother of Jesus. In some traditions, the color rose is associated with the third Sunday of Advent to signify joy.

White is the color of the Christmas season, which begins with Christmas Eve services. White is used through Epiphany (the Sunday after January 6), which is the day we celebrate the baptism of the Lord. Christmas Eve is not part of Advent but is the beginning of Christmas itself, since days in the Christian calendar begin at sunset the day before, as they do in the Jewish calendar.

Our greatest challenge is to make Advent a time of expectation for Christ's coming to be with us, not a frantic time of meeting secular demands of the season. Ways we can do this are by taking time to read or listen to a daily Advent devotional or having a daily moment of reflection. Whatever you choose, we hope you have a blessed Advent season.

Christmas can be a bittersweet season. While the world celebrates, many carry quiet pain - grief from the loss of a loved one, broken relationships, illness, insecurity, loneliness, or unmet expectations. The joyful gatherings we see around us can remind us of what - and who - we are missing.

This tender service is often called The Longest Night because it coincides with the darkest day of the year, December 21. As the nights grow longer, many of us feel the weight of that darkness in our own lives. Blue Christmas creates space to name our sadness, acknowledge our fears, and be reminded that we do not walk through them alone. We need hope - and that hope has been revealed.

On the longest night of the year, we invite you into a quiet, meditative time of worship: a space to remember, to offer our hurting places to God, and to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ.

Come hear scripture, pray for healing and wholeness, and listen to music that gently reminds us:

God is near to those who mourn, who grieve, and who struggle.

Christ’s light shines even in the deepest darkness.

We hope you will join us.

December 24 | 5 PM, 7:30 PM, 11 PM

Come celebrate the hope, joy, and wonder of Christ’s birth with us this Christmas Eve. We look forward to worshiping with you.

Sunday, November 30 | 6:30 PM

We invite you to join us for a joyous service where we will hang the "greens," have our first chance to sing the great carols of Christmas by candlelight, and explain the meaning of the decorations we use during the season.

Advent is the season of preparation for the birth of Jesus and his second coming. During the four weeks leading up to Christmas, we prepare ourselves and our church community by making room in our lives for Jesus. To start the season, one of our age-old traditions is the Hanging of the Greens.
